Question: What can I enter in the Claw Foot Portal?

Answer: First of all, the Claw Foot Portal is the empty box at the bottom of the screen after you go to Live TV and enter 243-Zones. Here are some things you can enter in there:

DISABLE DISK SPINDOWN makes it so that your hard drive still spins when the unit is off. The constant noise is found by many to be less distracting in their sleep than the regular spin up and spin down. Use ENABLE DISK SPINDOWN to change it back.

PLAY CONTINUOUSLY will add a Play Continuously menu item to your Playback options. Enter it again to turn it off.

TIC TAC TOE will allow you to play Tic Tac Toe by pressing 111-Zones.

ME LIKE COOKIES will show you a short hidden message.

MODESTO GIRL will make all your red circles look like hearts instead permanently. This happens automatically on Valentine's Day.

SPORTSGUARD ON enables a special soft padding feature on sports shows, configured in the same place as the default recording options. SPORTSGUARD OFF turns it back off.

SHOWGUARD ON enables a special soft padding feature on regular shows. SHOWGUARD OFF turns is back off.

JULIE lets you know how Spencer feels.

Hardware:

Justin Leavens added on 12/10/2002: TIC TAC TOE also gives you the game choices "Snake" and "Thermonuclear War" :*)

I don't think Sportsguard or Showguard work in the version 4.0 software...

ME LIKE COOKIES is worth typing in.

Also, make sure to try this, one of the best easter eggs of the Replay:

Menu:Setup
Then hit 888 ReplayZones.

AlanW added on 01/08/2003: Easter Egg doesn't seem to function on the 3000 series RTV (jleavens: no, this was added in the 4000 series and remains in the 5000 series)

xstrym added on 03/10/2003: I have an pv-hs2000 and "Showguard" doesn't seem to have any effect when I type it in. "Sportsguard" seems to work, however.

jleavens writes: I mentioned that in another FAQ the other day. Neither my 3000, 4000, or 5000 units recognize "SHOWGUARD ON" or "SHOWGUARD OFF" commands. Not sure if this was ever actually connected to the CFP or if it was just unsupported in code.

Greg Vaeth added on 06/07/2003: Maybe this is real obvious, but if CFP entries do not require a keyboard, how do you get the pop-up keyboard to come up? If keyboard is required, should state this explicitly. Don't see this in any of the hits using keyboard or portal in the search field.

jleavens writes: If you move into the CFP area and hit select, a keyboard pops up on screen. Same keyboard you get if you are searching for a show....

Scottamus added on 09/01/2003: Additional commands for 5.0:

BESMART - Toggles "Smart record options"
Response "Enjoy the Buffiness"
Apparently, the folks at RTV are big fans of the following shows: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, Coupling, Farscape, Firefly, and Smallville. With Smart Record on, certain default record options will be used when you try to record any of these shows. For example, quality is set to High and Category is set to "Buffy." This feature also makes your RTV "smart" about Movies and Sports, recording them at HIGH and in the "Movies" or "Sports" categories (respectively) by default.

SNAPSHOT - Toggles Snapshot mode
Response "Snapshots ON - hit RECORD to take a video snapshot"
This takes a snapshot of the current video (minus any OSD). The resulting .BMP is placed in your Photo parition, under the /Snapshot folder. Apparently, ReplayTV's photo slideshow does not support bitmaps, so you will have to use DVArchive 2.1+ or QVision to view these snapshots.

SCREENSHOT - Toggles Screenshot mode
Response "Screenshots ON - hit RECORD to take an OSD screenshot"
This takes a screenshot of the currently visible OSD only, no video. Same.

MeLikeCookie added on 10/06/2003: Type 'THEME PRIORITY' into the clawfoot portal and you can prioritize theme recordings from 1 (highest) to 99 (lowest). This is good for when you have multiple theme recordings that may come up at the same time - you can control which show gets recorded.

Dennis added on 10/28/2003: I think you should add the "Theme Priority" feature to this set of facts. You have it listed elsewhere, but ALL clawfoot portal commands should be listed toghether.

jleavens writes: Ah, yes. Added in 5.1 "THEME PRIORITY" will give your theme recording setup dialog an additional field that allows you to set a conflict priority value between 1 and 99 (lowest is higher priority).

t-dog added on 01/24/2004:
Does anyone remember how to change the menu/bacground colors on the pv-hs2000 series?

FYI - Disable Disk Spindown not valid on 4k & 5k
Posted by: rm -rf *.* at 06/18/2004 at 18:47:05 reply

FYI-

In regards to 4k's and 5k's only:

I was informed by j.m. that typing DISABLE DISK SPINDOWN in the CFP, despite the acknowledgement from the ReplayTV unit that it has enabled the feature, these commands do nothing for the 4k and 5k units. This would be due to the fact that these units never realy "turn off" like the older ones did and the power button simply controls the video output and response to remote control commands.

TO VIDEO - Toggles Reverse Screenshot mode
Response "Reverse Screenshots ON - hit RECORD to copy OSD to the video layer!"
Note: I haven't been able to actually get this to do anything. When I hit record, it just reports, "Couldn't copy graphics."

A note on theme priorities
Posted by: bjw at 08/17/2004 at 00:41:24 reply

Lower priority (big number) shows that start before (and overlap) higher priority (small number) shows will be preferenced (contrary to what you would expect). This means that a priority 1 show would be missed while RTV records a priority 2 show if the 2 show went from 2:00-3:00 and the 1 show went from 2:30-3:00. It records whichever is first. This can be avoided by setting the higher priority theme to "Keep until I delete" which will always make sure to record the high priority show even if there is an overlap.

Disk spindown on 5040 works!
Posted by: Space at 08/30/2004 at 22:34:35 reply

Entering "ENABLE DISK SPINDOWN" in the CFP on my 5040, does indeed cause the disk to spin down when I turn the unit "off".

"DISABLE DISK SPINDOWN" appears to do nothing because that is the default on 4000 and 5000 units (unlike 3000 and earlier units), so the ReplayTV already has disk spindown disabled.

If you "ENABLE DISK SPINDOWN", the "DISABLE DISK SPINDOWN" command will get you back to the default (never spin down the disk).

Mistaken?
Posted by: Space at 09/01/2004 at 19:36:24 reply

Although I get the "please wait..." when turning the 5040 on after enabling disk spindown, I am told that the disk really does not spin up/down, and is always spinning. So, I guess it really does not work on the 4000 & 5000 series.

TIC-TAC-DOE=NG; JOSHUA=OK!
Posted by: ClearToLand at 01/24/2005 at 20:55:52 reply

Tic-Tac-Toe didn't do anything on my 5040 with Software Version: 530511440. But, JOSHUA (thanks Gary!) worked just fine and produced the menu:

Greetings, TimeShifter.
Shall we play a game?

1. Tic-Tac-Toe
2. Snake
3. Global Thermonucler War
4. O

SNAPSHOT and 888 Zones
Posted by: CouchPotato69 at 11/21/2005 at 00:26:10 reply

Well, SNAPSHOT seems allow you to create a .bmp but it's completely useless because neither DVArchive nor REPhoto can preview or download it. I can't find ANY software that can transfer photos from the replayTV to the PC.

888 ReplayZones does not work in the setup menu or anywhere.

This is the case for BOTH my 5040, now a 5120, and my 5080.

Enable Spindown works on my 4000
Posted by: Brett Johnson at 12/15/2005 at 23:56:15 reply

My 4000 is currently undergoing a disk failure. The disk is making alot of noise, frequent freezes, crashes etc. I ordered a new 320GB drive. But in the mean-time I decided to "Enable Disk Spindown". The drive does indeed spin down about 20-30 seconds after I turn the ReplayTV "off". Ahh - blessed silence.

However there is an annoying bug. If the RTV records a show while "off", it doesn't spin the drive down when it is finished recording. That nearly defeats the purpose of the whole thing. I had to cancel my 1am recording of the Daily Show/Colbert Report because I couldn't stand listening to the drive howl all night long.

CFP Disk Spindown on 5080
Posted by: Anonymous [wormhole@bellsouth.net] at 06/04/2006 at 14:50:10 reply

I did enter the spindown comand but just as i have read it still spins anyway. Is their anyway to make this work?
Last where can I get a description of what the other options do in 243 zones as some places say what it is but do not give all the information on what will hapen.

Posted by: Anonymous at 10/03/2006 at 21:11:40 reply

JOSHUA now appears to print "Acknowledged" and nothing more. JULIE no longer does anything as of 04 Oct 2006 (latest software, whatever version that is)
