Question: Can ReplayTV automatically skip commercials?
Answer: The Replay 4XXX and 5000 models have the Commerical Advance function built into the software which allows the Replay to automatically detect commerical breaks and skip them while playing back programs. This works even if you're watching live TV that has been delayed for at least 3 or 4 minutes.
Commercial Advance is not perfect, but most users average between 75% and 95% success rate with it. Programs with a lot of dark content (Law & Order, for instance) will tend to confuse the CA, and sometimes will cause playback to jump program material. In these cases, you'll need to turn CA off temporarily for that show, and watch whatever you need to watch.
If you have a 20XX or 30XX unit (including Showstopper units), you'll need to use the QuickSkip button which will jump through the program at 30 second intervals.
The ReplayTV 55XX models do not have the function to skip commericals enabled, although it is supported by the hardware. Do a search here on this site for "5500" or see this thread for information on how to enable this and Internet Video Sharing on the 55XX.

I have a 5504 and it has a function called Show|Nav that allows you to skip forward and backward in "segments." It seems to have the same functionality as CA, working about 75% of the time skipping commercial breaks. Just press the right or left arrow on the remote while watching a recorded show.
